RRWA’s Temporary Change to Free Chlorine Disinfection

Wonder why your drinking water has a strong chlorine taste and smell?

RRWA will temporarily change to free chlorine for disinfection in the Rathbun System on Monday, April 22, 2024. RRWA will return to chloramine disinfection on Monday, May 13, 2024. RRWA changes from chloramines to free chlorine as our disinfectant once every three to five years or as needed to maintain water quality. This change to free chlorine is done to prevent nitrification and control microbiological growth in our distribution system. RRWA usually makes this change to free chlorine in the spring of the year, and it lasts for approximately two weeks. Your water may have a stronger chlorine taste and smell during this time, but it is safe to drink. RRWA notifies our individual customers and the water systems we serve about this change so that those who may be affected by free chlorine in their drinking water can take any necessary steps. Please contact Jer Buckingham, RRWA’s Plant Superintendent, at 1-800-233-8849 with any questions about your drinking water.
